Remote Career and Major Exploration for Current Students
The University Career Center offers a variety of online services to help students explore and research majors and careers. KU offers over 190 undergraduate majors, giving you plenty of options to choose from. Whether you begin your exploration by accessing your academic and personal strengths or conducting an informational interview with an alum to learn more about a potential career, the UCC online resources provide important information to aid with your decision.
Online Resources
Use the Exploration Web Hub to begin exploring options by browsing careers, majors, and interest areas. All of the resources interconnect, so you can consider majors based on career interests, explore careers based on majors, and view careers and majors associated with interest areas /careers.
Careers and Majors: This page allows students to explore careers, industries and KU majors. Click on a major, career or industry to explore departmental websites (which includes academic curriculum), career paths, potential employers, job search tips and strategies, professional associations and links to job and internship boards.
TuaPath – Jayhawk Ready offers a series of resources and videos relating to exploring careers, applying to jobs and internships, the job search process and networking tips and techniques.
Exploratory Pathways: This page provides descriptions of each of the Undergraduate Advising Center’s 5 exploratory pathways, including majors and curriculum guides, how students can get involved outside the classroom, and newsletters to help you discover, develop and ultimately declare your major.
Candid Career: This site features video interviews with industry professionals regarding college majors, jobs titles and careers. Click on “Browse Videos” for a complete list of testimonials.
Career One Stop: This page highlights industry trend information. For this exercise, you will focus on the links for “Fastest-Growing Industries” and “Industries with Declining Employment.”
O*Net Online has detailed descriptions of the world of work for career exploration and job analysis.
Career Assessments are an excellent place to start when making career choices, such as choosing a major, exploring occupations, and determining a career plan. The UCC offers 5 assessment options. Some assessments are free while others require a fee. We recommend that you schedule an online coaching appointment to review and discuss your own personal assessment outcomes, including how your strengths and skills fit with your major or career pathway.
Networking Resources to Explore Majors / Careers
Your relationships (network) with people like your family, friends, coworkers, classmates, former supervisors, and faculty can play a valuable role in exploring careers and majors. Your networks can provide career information and advice or job and internship leads. Expanding your network is key for career exploration.
KU Mentoring: This platform provides the opportunity to connect with KU alumni for informational interviews, networking (including introducing you to others in the industry), resume reviews, interviewing tips and overall career advice.
LinkedIn Alumni: This site allows students to explore career paths and job titles for 150,000+ KU alumni so that you can expand your network and learn from the professionals.
Informational Interviews: This page provides tips and techniques to conduct informational interviews. Informational interviews provide insight from industry professionals to help you explore your career.
Career Communities provide students with career and major exploration through events, networking with employers, faculty and staff, and specialized events.
