The Value of Internships

Internships are the best way to know if the career path you're pursuing is the one for you. Building confidence and communication skills are some of the most valuable advantages. Additionally, it is not only a great resume builder, but internships also provide you with real world experience and a network. Companies that provide these internships do it to find potential full-time workers. About 60% of the time, an internship turns into a job offer!

And, it’s never too early for an internship. If your not sure where to start, check out these resources or attend the Internship Fair on November 14th from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Kansas Union.

Check out these helpful resources from the University Career Center to explore internships you might want to pursue.

Need Some Electives?

UNIV 120: Introduction to Engaged Learning

Explore your interests in several engaged learning opportunities offered on KU’s campus, including service learning, research, global opportunities, and internships, through self-exploration and hands-on activities related to each experience. You will be able to identify the opportunity/opportunities in which you are most interested and create the materials needed to pursue that experience with the support of your instructor. By the end of the course, you will have a plan outlined to pursue the engaged learning opportunity/opportunities of your choice. You will also have completed at least one requirement related to fulfilling an experiential learning certificate. Sample syllabus

LA&S 490: Internship Exploration

Are you needing or wanting credit for an upcoming internship? If you want to complete an internship that is not related to your major, your department doesn't offer an internship course, you don't meet the requirements for your department's internship course, you are not accepted into a major yet, or you need to explore another option, you may want to consider EPSY 575/LA&S 490: Internship Exploration. This course requires permission from the instructor to enroll, additional coursework outside of the internship conducted via the Internet, working a minimum number of hours a week at the internship, and finding an internship via your own connections or the resources at the University Career Center. ***Approved course for Goal 6 (Innovation and Creativity) of the KU Core. Sample syllabus

Meet Vanessa!

Vanessa - museum studies

Name: Vanessa Delnavaz

Year: Graduate Student

Major: Museum Studies

Company: American Museum of Natural History

Location: New York, NY

Vaness Delnavaz spent the summer interning in the Invertebrate Paleontology Department at the American Museum of Natural History. She curated a large, recently donated collection of fossil invertebrates by helping to re-house and catalog over 1,000 specimens. She said handling specimens that were alive hundreds of millions of years ago never got old (pun intended!). In fact, Vaness hopes to secure a job as a collection manager at a natural history museum when she graduates in May.

“When looking for internships, I suggest applying to anything and everything that is of interest of you! Also, if there is a particular person you want to work with, emailing them even if they don’t have any opportunities posted, sometimes has the potential to lead to some awesome opportunities.” --Vanessa Delnavaz
